NEW RELEASES, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY REVIEW AND WHY WE'RE BETTER THAN A MOVIE RENTAL MACHINE...

NEW THIS WEEK:

DOWN THE SHORE, a gripping drama about shattered dreams, shocking crimes and final chances. This film features recently deceased James Gandolfini, of The Sopranos fame, in one of his last starring roles. Variety calls Gandolfini's performance, his "most substantial role to date."

BYZANTIUM, a vampire movie, just in time for Halloween directed by Neil Jordan, who also directed Interview With The Vampire. Twists, turns and drama as secrets of 200 years of shared history unravel as two female vampires wreak havoc in a UK seaside community.

MOLLY MAXWELL, a romantic drama that is reminiscent of The Police's "Don't Stand So Close to Me," with a younger male teacher and female student and drawn into a complicated relationship. The film is set in the backdrop of Toronto, debuting local writer and director Sara St.Onge is her feature debut.

R.I.P.D., or Rest In Peace Department is a supernatural action adventure in the spirit (pun intended) of the Men In Black Ghostbusters franchises. It pairs Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds as a pair of cops charged with protecting the living from increasingly destructive spirits hiding among them on Earth. When they discover a plot that potentially threatens life as we know it, the fun begins.

I GIVE IT A YEAR, is a Rom-Com from the producers of Love Actually, Notting Hill and Bridget Jone's Diary. The story is one of opposites attract, but can they last? GQ magazine calls it "Absolutely brilliant, the funniest film in years".

               MONSTERS UNIVERSITY REVIEW

                                        WATCH A TRAILER...

In 2001, Disney/Pixar introduced us to two animated loveable--yes, loveable--monsters named Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan. Mike, voiced by Billy Crystal, and John Goodman as Sulley, taught us all about the monsters in our closets and under our beds. They were endeared by children and parents alike. As Disney/Pixar continued to crank out sequels to the hit Toy Story, poor Mike and Sulley sat like the unwanted toys in the attic.

When all hope seemed lost, we are treated, not to a sequel, but a prequel. Since the Star Wars disappointment, I have been weary of the word prequel; however, Monsters University has renewed my faith.

This could have been titled When Mikey Met Sulley (Billy Crystal reference intended). It follows a young Mike and Sulley attending Monsters University, each vying to gain entry to the coveted Scare School program. There is the typical jock/nerd rivalry that tends to surface in college movies.

The writing is strong and driven. This is one of those rare films that children and adults of all ages can truly enjoy together. It is reminiscent of The Flintstones, which I loved during my childhood. I was unaware of a whole different level of humour that the adults were simultaneously enjoying that was "over my head".

Monsters University is an instant classic that is worthy of spurring additional sequels in the future. It is truly a "family" movie that all will enjoy.

It features a strong ensemble including Canadian Liam James in his biggest feature role, supported by Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet and more. It is "certified fresh" by Rotten Tomatoes and Peter Travers, of Rolling Stone, calls it "Bracingly Fresh and Funny".

ZOMBIES, PARENTS RESOURCES, GH POINTS PROGRAM and MUCH MORE...

NEW RELEASES OCT. 8

This Tuesday, there are movies that appeal to a wide range of tastes:
Hangover III,  Barbie: A Pony Tale, Curse of Chucky, The Horses of McBride (a true story of a young girl’s passion to save two horses stuck in snow in B.C.), Much Ado About Nothing, The Purge, Stuck in Love, and After Earth (a Sci-Fi starring Will and Jaden Smith).

ZOMBIES GO "A LIST"

Since George Romero brought zombies to the forefront of B-movies, they have cemented their place at the forefront of cult movie favourites. A new era of Zombies has emerged--and this time they have invaded the Red Carpet. TV's The Walking Dead has ushered in a new resurgence of zombie mania. This time, instead of a cult following, zombies have infiltrated the mainstream. Despite being snubbed at the Emmys by peers, The Walking Dead continues to dominate viewer-wise.

"(The) season-three finale shattered the zombie drama's own ratings record yet again, scoring 12.4 million total viewers in its initial 9 p.m. broadcast and 8.1 million in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. The numbers represent series bests in total viewers and the demographic".

Not since an all-star ensemble including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Benning, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Jack Black and many more, appeared in MARS ATTACKS, has so much attention been focused on B-Movie territory.

ABOUT MY REVIEWS

As this is my first review, just an advisement that I intend to strategically review movies without revealing vital plot information. I will always attempt to disclose no more than one would learn from a trailer or the synopsis that accompanies the movies on our website. Any review is an opinion and I will try to give mine in as unbiased a fashion as possible, while providing useful insight.

WORLD WAR Z--REVIEW

Riding the coattails of The Walking Dead's success comes World War Z, a futuristic horror set in a post-apocalyptic world where, for unknown reasons, the population is rapidly being infected and becoming Zombies. Caught in the foray is Hollywood's golden boy, BRAD PITT.  Pitt, at the pinnacle of his career, immediately lends credibility and marketability to the film. Mainstream viewers are hungry for more Walking Dead style action--combining strong characters, suspense, plot twists, fast paced action, combined with the standard shock and gore. Casual movie goers are drawn by the allure of Pitt and many are making their first foray into the world of the macabre. In either case, World War Z should satisfy all.

Any movie of this genre, whether horror, futuristic, or science fiction, requires a suspension of disbelief. World War Z requires a little more than many. There are holes in the script that one must ignore. The action and edge of your seat excitement allows one to overlook these more easily. Pitt's character Gerry Lane is caught in a vulnerable urban setting with his family when they confront the crisis for the first time. Here, the survival rollercoaster begins. The viewer begins to realize Lane is no Average Joe. His actions foreshadow there is more to him than meets the eye.

Action is interspersed with scenes created to give a background and global perspective to the crisis. These serve to give the viewer a sense of the enormity of the pandemic. As events unfold, Lane, attempting to ensure the safety of his family, is drawn back into a life he had left behind. This world intersects those desperately looking for the cause and possible cure for this plague. Thus, the stage is set.

The zombies in World War Z, are not those of Night of The Living Dead or The Walking Dead. They are not slow moving and lacking any discernible thought. They are ravenous, fast moving, rabid creatures. This allows the adrenaline rush and jump moments for the audience. It also creates the air of an action movie--appeasing the non-horror fans. There is a resemblance to the horde in I Am Legend, starring Will Smith. In fact, there are many parallels between the storyline of the two movies. It is also reminiscent of the War of the Worlds remake, starring Tom Cruise.

In the end, I recommend World War Z for it's thrilling action, great CGI effects and general captivating entertainment factor. This is NOT for young children or those who dislike gore or frighten easily.

ZOMBIES FOR KIDS?

For children--much more mild--I recommend Daddy, I'm A Zombie. It is a great claymation feature just in time for Halloween. It is rated PG for scary images, thematic elements and some rude humour.

PARENT'S RESOURCES

I am often asked by parents if a certain movie is appropriate for their children. The fact is you know your kids best--what they can handle and what suits the way you want them raised. What I recommend when making these choices are two websites:

This site contains its' own search bar where you can look for the title you want to know about.

This website rates most movies in terms of three areas--each rated separately: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, and Profanity. It rates each of these areas on a score of 1 to 10. It also describes the scenes for each sub-category, so you know exactly what happens in those scenes. It also denotes any drug or alcohol use, suggests discussion topics you can have with your kids and conveys the general message of the movie. All of this is available when you click "complete content analysis" that accompanies the general description of the movie.

This website is run by a group whose mission statement is as follows:

“Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.
We exist because our nation's children spend more time with media and digital activities than they do with their families or in school, which profoundly impacts their social, emotional, and physical development.   As a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, we provide trustworthy information and tools, as well as an independent forum, so that families can have a choice and a voice about the media they consume.”

This website not only addresses movies, but also, tv, books, video games and more.

All media are given an age appropriate rating by the website board--with appropriate explanations.  Parents and kids are also encouraged to write their own reviews and assign an age appropriation themselves. The combination of kids' perspective, parents'
perspective and the board’s recommendation should be very helpful in making a decision.

WHAT'S NEW for September 20th

Currently renting this week we have new titles World War Z, The East, Arthur Newman, The Bling Ring, Erased, Drift, and many more.

World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, is a zombie thriller. It is reminiscent of I Am Legend, with heartpounding action and plenty of jump moments. Drift is a surfing movie based on real life during the origins of the surfing sport in Australia in the 70’s. The Bling Ring is also based on the true story of a group of fame obsessed teenagers living in the L.A. suburbs who track celebrities and rob their empty homes for the purpose of obtaining "bling". Sofia Coppola writes and directs and Emma Watson shines.

Next week we feature the Blockbuster (pun intended) Iron Man 3, featuring Robert Downey Jr. reprising brash portrayal of playboy Tony Stark and his alter ego. Supporting cast includes Gweneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Sir Ben Kingsley.

An interesting fact regarding Iron Man 3 is that almost 4 minutes of extra footage was filmed exclusively for the Chinese market. China only allows 34 foreign films in the market annually, and the Marvel (now Disney owned) deferred to the Chinese government to gain access to the almost 1.4 billion potential viewers the Chinese market represents. This, in my humble opinion, is the start of a disturbing trend. The four minutes consist of throwaway dialogue and revolve around gratuitous product placement dictated, indirectly, by the Chinese government. The bright side is that we, in North America, aren't subjected to this extra footage. Furthermore, the extra income the huge market represents can be reinvested in making more great movies.

Other new releases this coming week include Redemption, starring Jason Stratham; Lethal Justice, featuring Steven Seagal; Unfinished Song, with an ensemble cast led by Terrance Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave; Blood Of Redemption, with the trio of Dolph Lungren, Vinnie Jones and Billy Zane; and, for Horror fans, I Spit on Your Grave 2.

ABOUT THE RATINGS SYSTEMS

Last week I mentioned I was going to delve into the Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings for the uninitiated.

Rotten Tomatoes is a film review aggregator. It compiles reviews from authors that are certified members of various writing guilds or film critic associations. These reviews are reflected as positive or negative by RT staff. If 60% or more reviews are favourable, the movie gets a tomato. If a movie rates below that it gets a green splotch--a rotten tomato. Major film critics such as Roger Ebert, Stephen Hunter, Lisa Schwartzbaum, and Peter Travers are considered Top Critics. A film with 75% or better from at least 40 reviewers, including at least 5 top critics, is considered "certified fresh".

Rotten Tomatoes also compiles audience ratings and creates an aggregate score. There is sometimes a very large discrepancy between critic and audience ratings. For example, We're The Millers, currently on the big screen, got a 47% rotten tomato from critics while audiences rated it at 76%, enough to get a tomato, by critic's standards. On our website you will usually see the tomato rating on the right side of the screen when you click on a movie to get the synopsis or to rent it. If you click on the tomato, it diverts you to the www.rottentomatoes.com website. The rating on our website shows the critic rating but when you click on the tomato you see the critic rating side-by-side with the audience rating (accompanied by a spilled popcorn bucket). If you take more credence in your peers' opinion, this is a worthwhile detour. When you are done, click the left, or back, arrow in the top left of the screen where you can return to our website and rent the movie, if you wish.

The IMDB (Internet Movie Database) is a similar rating scale. It is the score, out of 10, that is usually beside the Rotten Tomato score on our website. This rating is derived by viewer submissions that are run through a complicated formula to provide a weighted mean that is supposed to prevent "ballot stuffing". The system has been recognized as somewhat flawed but, similar to a political poll, has some accuracy within a parameter of error.

In the end, you are the only critic that matters. As I discuss movies with customers as they are returned, there are always diverse opinions about every movie. Some love one while others hate it. The value of Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB ratings is you can keep track of how similar they are to your own opinions. This will allow you some guidance when making movie choices in the future.

MY PICKS THIS WEEK

Movies I personally enjoyed and would recommend to movie lovers--ones who love good movies from any genre:

MUD: Starring Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Sam Shepard, and Reese Witherspoon. This one gets my early pick for Best Picture and Best Actor nominees. Original, gripping and genuine acting, supported by a strong, authentic script.

THE SAPPHIRES: Another one, like Mud, that flew under the radar at the box office but presents a fabulous, based on true, story. The Sapphires uses humour as a vehicle to keep things light in a racial climate reminiscent of 42.

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA: The story of Liberace, portrayed by none other than Michael Douglas. Worth the price of a rental just to see that, add Matt Damon as his naive young lover and you witness veteran Actors at their best--far out of their comfort zones. This story is character driven and both Douglas and Damon outdo themselves.

COLLINGWOOD CINEMA CLUB featured Love Is All You Need, starring Pierce Brosnan and Trine Dyrholm, September 9th. If you missed it or want a second viewing with friends or family we have it in stock for rent.

JUST FOR KIDS

Recent recommended releases for kids include:

Epic, a great family animated movie from the creators of the Ice Age series
Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright--an new original movie
Wiener Dog Nationals, a funny family movie featuring racing dachshunds! and, just in time for Halloween,
Daddy, I'm a Zombie, a claymation in the spirit of Nightmare Before Christmas

KIDS CONTEST: Come in and tell us the name of the character Miss Piggy loves in the Muppets and get a free kid's 7 day rental!
