Here is a link to his award winning short--his first ever, inspired by The Walking Dead.
Wasaga Beach Zombie Mash
Later this week I will be discussing Tom Strnad and his Mountain Goat Film Company, of Collingwood, that taught Devin and 5 others in a filmmaking course that reaped 3 Platinum (1st place) and one Gold (2nd place) awards at the WBSSF against 46 entrants from 6 countries!

BACK TO THE MOVIES!
It's been a busy month in the movie world. The SAG awards and Golden Globes have come and gone and there is much anticipation for the Academy Awards on March 2nd.
Since my last entry there have been some fabulous releases on DVD and Blu-ray. Here is a quick recap of recent and new releases we have in stock:
THE BUTLER: This epic, inspired by the true story of a White House butler who served no less than 7 different U.S. Presidents during his tenure, is portrayed by Oscar winner Forest Whitaker. An A-list cast including Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Alan Rickman, and Robin Williams ensures a memorable film.
ELYSIUM: Matt Damon and Jodie Foster lead this politically charged sci-fi film set in 2154. Like his film District 9, which was a commentary on Apartheid, writer and director Neill Blomkamp uses science fiction to make a political statement on the dichotomy between rich and poor in the future. A great action film.
BLUE JASMINE: Woody Allen is improving with age and Blue Jasmine is the proof. With, as always, a hand-picked cast featuring Alec Baldwin and a magnificent Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine examines the life of a New York socialite named Jasmine (Blanchett) and her fall from grace. Rumor has it that this is loosely based on uberfraudster Bernie Madoff's wife. A triumph of filmmaking.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS: Based on the true story of a U.S. cargo ship hijacked and held for ransom by Somali pirates, Tom Hanks, as the ship's captain and Barkhad Abdi, as the Pirate Captain, are on a collision course that becomes much bigger than both of them. Emotionally compelling and highly entertaining viewing.
BAD GRANDPA: Johnny Knoxville takes one of his most controversial JACKASS characters and goes on the road. Loads of shock gags ensue. Knoxville, appearing as a senior thanks to convincing makeup and prosthetics, lures unsuspecting citizens to react to outrageous goading while on hidden camera. Risque humour that is not for everyone but will make those with open minds laugh out loud.
RIDDICK: The franchise that started in 2000 with the low budget, Pitch Black and continued through The Chronicles of Riddick, progresses in this big budget extravaganza. Vin Diesel reprises the role of anti-hero Riddick and must battle lethal alien preditors in a fight against time. Great CGI and a must see for sci-fi action fans.
LAST VEGAS: Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. Need I say more? Not since The Rat Pack has a more talented foursome descended on Las Vagas. When the last of the lifelong friends is finally ready to get married, the four reunite in Vegas to throw a bachelor party, only to find they may have lost a step or two. Nevertheless, they are determined to relive their glory days regardless of the consequences. A fun movie with a great cast.
RUSH: One of the most anticipated DVD releases, Ron Howard's RUSH is the true story of a legendary Formula 1 rivalry during the Golden Age of F1 racing. An exhilarating and magnificent film with solid performances and great action footage.
Flying Under The Radar: From time to time excellent movies fly under the radar and fail to catch the mainstream eye. Here are a couple that are not to be missed.
ENOUGH SAID: James Gandolfini, better known as Tony Soprano, shines in his last film. Paired with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Elaine from Seinfeld, the two portray a humorous and genuine display of the awkwardness of middle-aged dating. Poignant and funny, I highly recommend this film.

FRUITVALE STATION: Winner of both the 2013 Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, this true story failed to find the mainstream. It revolves around the senseless shooting of a Bay area father on New Year's Day 2009 by Transit Cops. The tragedy was captured on passengers' cells and sent shockwaves through the US. Michael B. Jordan has a breakout performance in the main role.
